If you're searching for a replacement final drive for your CAT excavator, you'll run into two names constantly: swing gearbox and travel gearbox (also called final drive motor / travel drive motor). They're both gearboxes, but they do different jobs — and ordering the wrong one is a costly mistake. Here's how to tell them apart fast.
The swing gearbox powers the rotation of the upper structure (the cab and boom) on a hydraulic excavator. CAT swing gearboxes are axle-style and mount near the top. If the machine's cab spins left/right around its center, that's the swing drive.
The travel gearbox (travel drive / final drive motor) powers the tracks. There are two of them — one per side. If the machine moves forward/backward on its tracks, that's the travel gearbox.
